  9. An Homage to Skateboarding, written by a curb

I am a curb. I was created out of concrete to separate two other flat pieces of concrete. This is my story.

Shortly after I created, after seeing human after human pass by, I realized the sad truth…that I am invisible. No one ever loved me, cared about me, or ever even noticed me. Then one day a young human was rolling past me on a wooden toy. He was looking at me in a way I’d never experienced. Could he SEE me?  Yes! He came closer, he put his hands on me and he caressed me with this toy. Soon, we were dancing. Yes, dancing. Me, a stationary piece of concrete, - I actually danced! The boy jumped onto to me and I supported him with all my strength and he gracefully rode away. We danced for hours.

The next day he came back and he brought friends. They could all see me. It was magical. They all took turns dancing with me. If I was a Harvard MBA I might say that my benefit to cost ratio was skyrocketing. But I am not, I was just overwhelmed with how wonderful it felt to be loved. Those humans came back every day that summer month.

Then one day some other humans came. They had seen us playing but they had never seen ME before, even though they walked past me every day.  As with the nature of humans, they never gave me a single thought until other people were interested in me.  Their fingers were pointed at me and they seemed displeased. They had no interest in playing or dancing.

The next day when my friends came back, the other humans ran out. They were shouting. They told my new friends that they would be arrested (when humans lock each other in cages) if they ever came back to play with me. My friends were angry; I was sad. All the humans left me.

I did not see my friends for a long time.  I went back to being invisible.

Then one night, my friends came back to visit me. They didn’t forget me! Every so often, they return under the cover of darkness. We dance together like forbidden lovers, savoring each second together. I am happy because deep down, I realized that I’m not invisible to everyone. I am fortunate and thankful to know that I am loved.
